Communities develop their own terminologies. The knitting community is no different on that, and I'm guessing other crafting communities are the same.
Since the honest answer to 'what have you been working on?' for me is unpacking from a move (and I'm sure pictures of boxes would thrill all of you even less than unpacking them had intrigued me.....), I'm going to open up the discussion by talking about how we talk about our crafts.
Knitters -- especially the on-line knitting community -- have their own vocabulary. I've listed a few of the most common terms and/or my favorites below.
Feel free to comment on the vocabulary your crafting community has developed or links to on-line 'glossaries' as I'm sure that information will help someone.
LYS: local yarn shop
tinking: knitting backwards (carefully undoing a stitch at a time)
frogging: taking your work off the needles and (in a move that gives new knitters palpitations when they see it) unwinding lots. From rip it, rib it --> ribbit, ribbit --> frogging.
Frog pond: the pile of stuff awaiting frogging or other non-finishing fate
SABLE: stash acquired beyond life expectancy (in other words, if one never buys another yard of yarn, one would still expire with leftovers....packing/unpacking for this move has had me get all my yarn in one place; I'm definitely SABLE....)
SEX: stash enhancement expedition a.k.a. a trip to your LYS. OK, so I;m not sure I've ever seen anyone seriously use this. But it is in some 'glossaries' so I figured I'd list it for your amusement ;-)
YAS: Yarn Acquisition Syndrome - the inability of someone to not be able to buy yarn (those of us who have a bad case of YAS end up SABLE).
UFO: unfinished object
WIP: work in progress
The difference between a UFO and a WIP: at least for most people, the WIP will be finished at some future point. The chances the UFO will be finished are much less - a UFO is much more likely headed to the frog pond.
yarn barf: the messy chunk of yarn that sometimes comes out in an icky blob from the center of a ball of yarn
Bicraftual: someone who knits and crochets ;-)
KIP: knitting in public
So, one picture to finish this off.... Jez (a few weeks shy of birthday #21) explores the new digs ;-) and finds that boxes of yarn aren't as comfortable as piles of just yarn.....
So, what are you working on? Inquiring minds want to know! They (well, me at least) also want to know what fun terms other crafting/etc. communities have come up with!
WAYWO is a continuing series about what Kossacks are working on {mostly crafts but we're flexible and (at least in my case) inquisitive, so don't be shy about sharing}, usually posted around this time on Sundays. A Yahoo group includes a mailing listto announce when the diary is posted and a schedule of hosts. Feel free to sign up for future weeks or you'll just get me blathering on about knitting, with an occasional foray into genealogy. (If you don't want to sign up for the Yahoo group {it is only one or two emails a week!}, email me and I'll add you to the schedule.)
