The shadowboxing in the U.S. Senate nomination race continues. The latest volley is the press release quoted below from Mike Miles touting his latest endorsements (no real big names there) and expressing a certain amount of indignation at Chris Gates for continuing the search for nominees, rather than embracing Mike (without naming names).
The number of endorsements and their stature is limited, but, it still puts Mike ahead of anyone else in endorsements, and the implicitation is that a number of legislators are holding back on endorsing until they know who is in the race (I believe candidates must identify themselves by Feb. 22). In other words, they prefer Mike to anyone else currently in the race, but don't know who else might drop into the fray.
COLORADO LEGISLATORS COME OUT IN SUPPORT OF MIKE MILES
Over the weekend, nearly a dozen Colorado legislators agreed to go public with their support of Mike Miles. They believe Miles is the best candidate to beat Ben Campbell in November's U.S. Senate race. Many are angry at the continual search for a "big name" or "big money" candidate this late in the primary season.
"I have said all along that the Party is not one person or the DSCC. The Party is the people - the legislators, the county organizations, and the ordinary people who make up the Party," Miles said.
Miles, who has run a grassroots campaign for the last two years has overwhelming support among Party activists. Julia Hicks, the First Vice Chair of the Democratic Party in Colorado, also has openly supported Miles for months.
Because of his support among active Dems, Miles remains undaunted by the prospect of millionaire Rutt Bridges entering the race. Steve Naples, Chair or the Miles Campaign, put it this way: "Ours is the Party that values the democratic process and honors the voice of ordinary people. I don't think the people of Colorado will let anyone buy this race."
Legislators who have already endorsed Miles are:
Terrance Carroll 866-2909
Fran Coleman 866-2966
Jerry Frangas 866-2954
Peter Groff 866-4864
Rosemary Marshall 866-2959
Buffie McFadyen 866-2905
Mike Merrifield 866-2932
Angie Paccione 866-2917
Lois Tochtrop 866-2931
Frank Weddig 866-2942
Steve Naples said that the team is confident more legislators will be coming out soon to support Miles.
