100 plus years ago, the Rose Parade began. I'm sure it was magnificent at the time, but today, of course, it seems quite humble:
More than 2,000 people turned out on New Year's Day to watch a parade of flower-covered carriages, followed by foot races, polo matches and tugs-of-war on the town lot. The abundance of flowers prompted Professor Holder to suggest "Tournament of Roses" as a suitable name for the festival.
Yesterday, there were 50 floats, plus marching bands and entertainment and other items. Each float is decorated with more flowers than the average florist will use in five years. For every square foot of surface area, it takes 20 daisies, 30 roses or 36 marigolds.
For the 21st Century, has The Rose Parade become too excessive?
