Hi, this is Robert Haider -- a PCCC fellow. My senator, Byron Dorgan (D-ND), announced today that he plans to retire after 2010.
As a lifelong North Dakotan, let me tell you: We need Byron Dorgan. He consistently fights for the little guy against big corporations, even when other Democrats won't.
It may be a long shot... but if thousands of us tell Byron Dorgan we need him to keep fighting for us, maybe he'll reconsider.
Will you sign this rapid-response petition urging Senator Dorgan not to retire?
It says:
"Senator Dorgan -- don't retire! We need people like you in the Senate, fighting for the little guy against corporate power. Please keep fighting for us, and we'll fight for you."
Let's aim for 1,000 signers overnight. We'll deliver all signatures and notes directly to Byron Dorgan.
In his announcement today, Dorgan said he was preparing to run for re-election, but decided to retire in order to pursue other interests. Many pundits in DC thought that if he ran for re-election, he'd be a top Republican target. We need to let him know how much we appreciate him.
Here are a few great things Dorgan has done:
- Dorgan predicted the financial crisis 10 years ago. As he fought Wall Street deregulation, Dorgan specifically warned colleagues to remember the term "too big to fail."
- Dorgan fought the pharmaceutical industry. In December, he fought for lower-priced prescription drugs even when fellow Democrats (including the President) refused.
- Dorgan protected Internet freedom from telecom companies. Dorgan was the lead defender of Net Neutrality. Thanks in large part to him, your phone or cable company can't pick which websites open properly on your computer.
We need more Byron Dorgans in the Senate -- not less.
Will you sign our rapid-response petition urging Senator Dorgan to stay in the Senate?
Then, please tell your friends. Thanks for being a bold progressive.
