I wonder how much of the decline in support for Dems has to do with their bait-and-switch style of governing: for instance, health insurance reform.
Remember when it was being called healthcare reform?
Let's see: was that around the time President Obama scoffed at "little single payer" and Baucus, wide-eyed, pleaded innocent as to why it wasn't even being discussed?
"But you constituents nattered on so loud for so long, maybe we'll hand out some form of Public Option -- maybe, yeah, sure, uh huh, yup."
"Well, perhaps, a slightly smaller Public Option. Um, a little less than that. No, a somewhat thinner slice than that. Hmm, a micro-sized PO, will that do?"
"Ah, we were just kidding -- no Public Option for you!"
"But instead, we have this lovely parting gift: Medicare-expansion for the over 55!"
"So, you like that, do you? (Momentary pause) Then you can't have it!"
"And for looking so damn annoyingly hopeful, we're going to take away all abortion coverage. Wait, just for some states...which will eventually amount to 50."
"But, if you have a good, employer-based health plan you like, you won't lose it -- we'll just tax the shit out of you!"
"We take that back -- if you belong to a union that scares the shit out of us -- well, we'll hold off for a couple years before taxing the shit out of you, anyway."
"Stop, don't look behind the curtain! That's where we made a super dooper double secret deal with Big Pharma! None of your business."
"Where were we?, Oh yeah, remember when we promised reform would mean healthcare would be affordable, that you'd no longer suffer exclusions for pre-existing conditions or medical bankruptcies...psych!"
"What? You didn't read the fine print? Great! Now vote for us again!"
(And yes, this diary has been expanded from a comment I wrote yesterday on this issue.)
