Last year more than 50% of the American people voted for change. They voted for Barack Obama who ran for president promising health care reform, among other things. One year later the people of Massachusetts, "leading" the way, have shown us that Americans have already run out of patience. What is the point of it all?
For roughly half a century, the people of Massachusetts sent and then returned Ted Kennedy to the Senate; one of his lifelong goals was to pass health care reform; and now less than one year since Teddy passed, the people of Massachusetts have thrown a lifetime of work down the toilet for a pretty face. What's the point?
There we stood, one final vote in the House and Senate away from the first meaningful health care reform law in eons. But thanks to the infighting amongst the liberals and the progressives and the centrists and the turncoats and the independents and the independent turncoats, we wasted a year talking about doing something instead of doing something. What's the point?
How can this country overcome it's many problems when the people who live here have no patience; they have no ability to see past smoke and mirrors and talking points and a media obsessed with drama; they have no desire to fight the good long fight and instead bail-out at the first sign of difficulty. We worked so hard getting Obama into office and so hard to get as many Democrats in Congress as we could, but what has it given us? What has all that hard work resulted in: a discontented electorate (one year after making history, less than a year after avoiding a 2nd Great Depression), and a slow inevitable slide back to Republican rule -- AFTER 12 FUCKING MONTHS!! What's the point?
I read here that now some are now going to "go to war" or some other BS. I have news for you all, there is no war that we can win. We have the best person in generations in the White House and still the country refuses to change, it refuses to be led. Our nation is a collection of spoiled brats, who want what they want, when they want it, or else they'll throw out those who won't give it to them when they want it, and try someone else, anyone else as long as they get what they want. No one wants to work hard anymore; everyone wants an free and easy ride, a quick fix, a painless remedy. No one wants to pay for anything unless they, themselves benefit the most. The people of Massachusetts don't want to pay one dime for anyone else in America who needs health care and doesn't have it; and yet how many of those hypocrites sent a donation this week to Haiti (a worthy cause, but as it doesn't benefit Massachusetts, why did they bother? Why didn't they have protests about having to support the poor people in Haiti?).
This is not the talk of someone depressed by one election. Hell, I lived through a lifetime of disappointment in that regard. It's a final realization that no matter who we put into office, the American people are just too stupid, too lazy, too impatient, too selfish, too fat, too spoiled to ever be led to greatness again. We have the greatest man in generations as president and that isn't good enough. There's nowhere to go; there's no one better to hope for. The nation is adrift and lost at sea and there is no one left to rescue her.
There are so many to blame for this turn of events, and yes, many fingers should be pointed squarely at those who pretended to support this president, only to bail on him in his hour of need. You are part of the problem and you should be ashamed of yourselves. There's nothing wrong with fighting for a cause, but to do so at the risk of everything we fought for was selfish and short-sighted. So now you have the results of your actions. Congratulations. Now what will you do? You think Brown and Co. are going to get you closer to single payer health care? LOL, yeah, right. You spoiled, selfish fools.
I remain open to suggestions as to what I should hope for from here on out. I'm sure someone will be able to tell me why voting is still important, why volunteering to work for politicians is still a worthwhile endeavor, but I've got to tell you, I doubt I'll believe it.
What is the point of any of this? What is the point of last year's election if all we have to show for it is the election of a right-wing radical as a replacement for Ted Kennedy? What is the point?
