I love these guys ackshually
I caught a virus today. And I want to warn you all about this one. If anything pops up on your machine labelled "Internet Security 2010" and tries to tell you you have a bad virus on your machine and then starts sending you bogus Windows messages, that "Internet Security 2010" thing is ITSELF a virus. Do NOT attempt to let them do a scan or buy their product - it's a virus and a scam. I saw this pretty much right away and called McAfee.
I'm sorry to tell you that the virus was apparently downloaded to my machine in a cute pic I downloaded off lolkitties with a fat kitty rolling in money called "Captlist Fat Cat - all ur monies is mine". Well, ahem. And right before that I had been researching Chinese spyware. I'm not saying there's any connection between the two, but it is pretty damn peculiar. I think I'll let the icanhascheezburger site know. This all happened within minutes of my visiting both those places and I never had a virus before.
Somebody ought to let the icanhascheezburger site know. Call them or something. I'm kind of afraid to go back now, so if anybody has their phone number...............
Anyway, the Indian software guy technician I hooked up with - what a sweetheart - he not only cleaned all this spyware off my machine, but he figured out for me what had been hiding the icons on my desktop for eons (something the gurus where I worked last could never figure out) - he went deep into Windows system/root/system32 to do it. I saw him. Did the gotoassist thing and let him take over my machine. And - cleaned up a bunch of stuff that was slowing down my machine. And then we had a little conversation about pets. He asked me the name of my cat, I told him Rose - he told me the name of his cat is (redacted) I don't want to give his bosses even a chance to give him crap over bantering with a customer. I learned my lesson from the last call I got. Don't talk personal with them or their bosses will make them pay.
Anyway - if anything pops up on your machine that looks like Windows, or says "Internet Security 2010" DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING. Just call whoever your security provider is and let them handle it. It's a virus masquerading as a security provider.
Hope this helps somebody else here.
Regards, Rose
