Remember this song? It's a prayer and a yearning for something better!
Well, I think it's still true that the tired, the poor and the huddled masses are yearning to be free!
Many are growing ever more weary and disillusioned as the rich keep getting richer while the rest of us struggle to get by.
President Obama inherited a terrible mess, and he and the rest of our leaders need our continued prayers and support. If they fail to lift this country out of the mire, we all lose.
There is still much to hope for! It's only been one year, and though there have been many roadblocks, much has already been accomplished. (See this article at HuffingtonPost: Obama's First 100 Days: 10 Achievements You Didn't Know About)
The change towards a more just and perfect union will not come overnight, as powerful forces unwilling to surrender their power will continually muster all of their might and resources to oppose anything that might weaken their hold over the rest of us.
The rich and greedy continue to profit at our expense, and it must come to an end!
My American prayer is that this nation will become a better place - a place of love, justice and equality for all!
The Declaration of Independence says that all people are created equal. Inequality just goes against the spirit from which this country was forged. It also goes against the spirit of Christianity.
Paul the apostle wrote:
"We do not want you to have troubles while other people are at ease, but we want everything to be equal. At this time you have plenty. What you have can help others who are in need. Then later, when they have plenty, they can help you when you are in need, and all will be equal." (2 Corinthians 8:13-14)
It's too bad that we can't trust the rich and powerful in this country to be giving. The inequality and inequity that prevails is a drain on this nation and its people, and is breaking her spirit.
When a group of people abuse their freedom in ways that hurt others, the government must step in to make and enforce laws which will stop the injurious behavior.
The voters in the 2009 election put President Obama and Democrats at the top of the mountain, with hope that they would remember us at the bottom! Yet, again and again. as they have attempted to pass legislation that would do just so, they have encountered obstruction from those who lost the election.
What many people (Republicans,Tea Party, etc.) label as Obama's "socialistic" attempts to "redistribute the wealth" is but his attempt to put an end to the inequality and greed that are breaking down the people of this nation.
It is my hope that the people of this nation will support President Obama and our leaders as they try to put an end to the inequality in this land!
I want to encourage you to share in my continuing American prayer, the prayer of so many - the HOPE that brought President Obama into office - that things can still CHANGE for the better!
