I am sitting in the back of my HS theater in Medford, Oregon, listing to Joel Salatin (you know him from Food Inc amongst other things).
As he makes points, I will update regularly.
He's starting off with about 30 minutes of discussing what sustainable farming will look like.
"Even the things you treat the soil with are edible (in small quatities)"
"We want farms that are resilient - that are building organic matter instead of raping out organic matter"
Update [2010-2-19 22:2:13 by JD SoOR]: He's talking about who will populate the farms of our future? C,D, F students? Or Jeffersonian enlightened thinkers? Putting the best and brightest in charge of our air water and soil... so first piece is Producers He's laying things out now pretty fast and not going into too much depth. After the first 30, he's going to be back in with more depth, I think... but not speaking to ALL the pieces...
Next up: Processors... ONLY 5% of food consumed in a given place is produced there.
Update [2010-2-19 22:2:13 by JD SoOR]: Accountants -- people willing to talk to robots, Marketers -- gregarious story-telling schmoozers (tend to not be farmers, cuz if farmers were gregarious, they wouldn't be farmers. Distributors -- (Some of this is retouching on material he's presented and written about before). Finally, Customers -- the right kind of customers. Ones who get local food. One who knows where their kitchen is. We remodel kitchens and don't know how to use them.
"Every woman used to know how to cut up chickens... now half our customers don't know chickens have bones." (he acknowledge the inherent sexism before making the statement)
Update [2010-2-19 22:2:13 by JD SoOR]: "We need customers who want food that will rot." "We need customers who appreciate seasonality and don't DEMAND out of season stuff"
"Why are you buying corn in January in New Hampshire?"
Update [2010-2-19 22:2:13 by JD SoOR]: "If we get these six pieces working together, we can change this world." "...the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker are embedded in the village"
Now we move into a quick break and he'll be back to go into much more detail on the theme 'everything I want to do is illegal'...
Additional Updates will happen in comments :)
