Any resemblance the following story has to our current political environment is purely intentional.
A band of explorers were on a small plane that crashed in the jungle. One of them, Barry, said, "Look, you can see the beach from here. It's only a few hundred yards. If we go there we'll surely be picked up by one of the many ships that sail along the coast." Georgy said "No -- you're wrong. That's a mirage. We need to go this way." For some reason, all the other explorers agreed with Georgy, so they followed him into the jungle, away from the shore.

The bold explorers traveled for several days, getting deeper and deeper into the jungle. They were running out of food and water. Several were getting sick. Finally, Barry couldn't take it any more. "I told you -- we're going the wrong way. Things are getting worse and worse." Finally the other explorers listened to him. They elected him the leader. He turned them all around and started heading back the way they came.
After about a half hour, the band of explorers started grumbling. "Hey, you were supposed to lead us to the beach! We're tired and hungry. How come you haven't found us more food?" Georgy, who had led them into trouble in the first place, chimed in. "See? You should have never elected this guy. He said he'd change things but things are just as bad. You should have listened to me." Barry said "Wait a minute! Why should you listen to him? He's the one who caused this mess in the first place. Just be patient, he led us so far astray it will take a few days to get back to where we want to be."
All the other explorers said "Quit playing the blame game. We're all in this together. It's not constructive to criticize Georgy. Look forward, not backward! Quit whining! You were supposed to lead us to safety and you haven't done that." So the band of explorers held another election. They put Georgy back into power. Georgy promptly turned them around yet again, and kept marching deeper into the jungle. Within a few days, they all starved to death, so they didn't have to listen to Barry whining any more.
