Out here in the Rocky Mountains, where the imagery is reminiscent of the lyrics from America the Beautiful (amber waves of grain, purple mountains majesty) progressives have made tremendous strides in the last few years with our populist approach to issues vital to our region and country.
I am pleased to announce that a progressive leader from this region, Governor Brian Schweitzer of Montana, (to the left in a rare photo without his everpresent bolo tie) will be kicking off the 2010 Netroots Nation conference which begins Thursday, July 22nd.
In the summer of 2008, Gov. Brian Schweitzer gave a rousing speech at the Democratic National Committee Convention in Denver. He fired up the crowd by speaking out for the mantra heard time and again out here in the West – a new clean energy future - saying that four billion in tax breaks to Big Oil is "a lot of change, but not the change we need." Last summer, Gov. Schweitzer told activists to "get off your hind end" and work for change.
From healthcare reform to smart economic solutions, we need our leaders to fiercely advocate for progressive change. And Gov. Schweitzer is no stranger to taking on powerful interests for the sake of the public good.
The LA Times attributes the Governor's success to his ability to connect with the values of Western voters. But it's his common sense approach to smart, populist policies that make him the perfect person to kick off Netroots Nation this July.
As progressives, it's more important than ever for us to continue organizing, building coalitions and working tirelessly for our shared goals and values -- things like healthcare reform, clean energy and immigration reform. And we'll do just that this summer at Netroots Nation.
SO REGISTER TODAY! And did I mention how ridiculously cheap the room rates are?
P.S. The Netroots Nation auction is starting this Wednesday. Do you have an item to donate? Is so, click here to donate or send your donation information to Karen Kolber at karen at netroots nation dot org.
