There has been a lot of discussion of what affect on the November elections the failure of passage of Health care reform would have on the Democrats prospects. Take a look at the flip side of this, and think about what it means to the GOP if Healthcare reform does pass, as I believe it will.
It was Jim DeMint who famously declared that the Healthcare reform bill could be Obama's Waterloo if the GOP would just say No. The GOP drank that kool-aid and they are now all-in with this strategy. Ask yourself, what happens to the GOP when Healthcare reform passes?
Their all-in strategy, which includes voting No on everything not just Healthcare reform, means they would go into the November election with nothing more to say than "We tried to stop the socialists". That will be good enough for the base voters, but I can't seeing having much appeal beyond that.
I have seen a lot of discussion of how horrible it would be in November for Dems if Healthcare fails to pass, but little of the flip side. If Healthcare fails, it will indeed be bad for Obama and company in November, but they still would have a good argument as to why it failed and then be able to point to a lot more that has been done like economic stabilization, jobs bill, Afghanistan surge, etc. For the GOP its scorched earth or nothing.
Now I believe that the Dems should push through Healthcare reform on its merits and not base their votes on politics alone ala DeMint. However, for any wavering Democrat senator or representative, taking a look at what passage of the Healthcare Bill will do to the political landscape in November and seeing how it would leave the GOP wandering in the desert without a message, not even a No message, would be an added bonus for also doing the right thing for America.
