C'mon inside. I promise you a pootie pic first up...
There, see? Now on to what's really on my mind tonite...
This time last year I wrote a Top Comments piece on a Forgotten Anniversary. Tomorrow is eleven years since Mr. Brillig was diagnosed with cancer. Thanks to fantastic doctors, the benefit of years of medical research on both animals and humans, the collective *prayers (tm PastorDan) of all our friends and family, and quite possibly intervention by Ceiling Cat :-), he's here for the long-term. A gift for which I will eternally be grateful.
This truly was both a life-threatening as well as a life-altering event. I sat considering my annual question: What would life be like had Mr. Brillig not been so lucky? As I looked around at my family I realized that, for the first time, I needed to consider What would life be like if he hadn't had cancer?
Whaaa, you say? Let me explain:
At the time of his diagnosis, K1 was 9 months old. As a result of Mr. Brillig's staredown of (imminent) mortality, we put on hold considerations of having a second child. When we felt sufficiently secure that any mortality was as likely to be from random falling under a bus as to a recurrence of that cancer, my Maternal Clock had ticked down. Leading us to adoption as a way to complete our family. Leading us to K2.
I absolutely am not saying Mr. Brillig's cancer was a good thing. I wouldn't wish cancer on anyone. But if you join the club no one wants to join and make it to the Emeritus Ranks, IMHO there at least ought to be a silver lining. K2's all that and more.
Public Service Announcement time: The cancer Mr. Brillig had is a variant of colon cancer; the exact same cell only located in the smaller, less pliable appendix, which is why it was diagnosed small and in time. If you are over 50 or younger but have any of the risk factors for colon cancer, stop stressing about ZOMG THEY'LL HAVE TO STICK SOMETHING UP MY BUTT!!!!!!! and get get said butt to a doctor for a colonoscopy. Don't forget about breast cancer and cervical cancer screenings.
