It's been a LOOONNNGGG time since I've put a diary up. Just too busy settling into the Great Lakes region after having spent my entire life on the Left Coast.
I'm not Christian and don't celebrate Easter, but honor those of all faith paths whose beliefs and rituals bring them to reflect and rejoice in their unique and individual ways at any time of the year. To me, sacred holidays in all forms ultimately mean two things: time with those we love, and, well....food!
Today I celebrate my Kidlet's eleventh birthday, since kiddo won't be here for the real event when it happens. I haven't shared a birthday with my progeny since age 3, which is really depressing, and I find it interesting that as each year passes, I get more and more elaborate in what I do and how I do it.
The menu began this morning with scratch-made organic pancakes using local maple syrup (yet another Door County, WI blessing) and frozen local berries. We also had bacon, coffee and juice.
The party digressed from food politics a bit, as I made a four-tiered chocolate layer cake using Dr. Oetker organic cake mix (which is seriously dry) with homemade chocolate buttercream frosting. We also had frozen custard courtesy of my favorite fast food joint, Culvers.
Dinner tonight is baby back ribs with a dry rub that is so secret even the NSA doesn't know the recipe. They'll be grilled, slathered with HFCS (high fructose corn syrup)-free organic BBQ sauce that's been doctored a bit, my favorite dill coleslaw, and scratch-made baked beans.
Now I have to find a use for the six raw egg yolks I have left over from the buttercream frosting. I'm thinking creme brulee...ideas?
What's for dinner?
Bright blessings,
ANK
