Supreme Court Justice Stevens may soon be stepping down from his position and leaving the court with a vacancy to fill...
According to a New York Times article, "At 89, Stevens Contemplates Law and How to Leave It," there have been hints of the justice's departure since September, and this past Friday, Stevens remarked:
"I do have to fish or cut bait, just for my own personal peace of mind and also in fairness to the process," he said. "The president and the Senate need plenty of time to fill a vacancy."
It seems as though this administration is tackling one thing after another. After the passing of the health care bill, Obama and his cabinet members left no time for dilly-dallying, and considering a replacement for Stevens would only add to the agenda.
The confirmation of Justice Sotomayor was a huge accomplishment, not just for the administration, but for the country-- having our first Hispanic Supreme Court Justice.
It seems as though we will be hearing very soon if Stevens will leave his post and just what will be done about it.
