With over a third of all MLB players Latino, MLB should take a stand and take the 2011 Allstar game out of Arizona!
Currently there is a a petition out to ask MLB to take the Allstar game out of Arizona, and it does a nice job explaining the situation.
The Petition
Do you know what an "illegal immigrant" looks like?
Probably some of our best baseball players under the new anti-immigant law passed by the state of Arizona, which allows law enforcement officials to apprehend anyone based on whether they look like an "illegal immigrant." That translates into people with brown skin.
Boycotting is not happy hour but it is one of the ways in which we can express our displeasure. SB 1070 is a product of ignorance and a failed effort to find solutions to a broken immigration system. It legislates a system reminiscent of apartheid and must be rejected.
In the past, Arizona has been sanctioned by the NFL when the state refused to observe MLK Jr. Day, since the NFL has a large makeup of players of African-American descent. Given that Hispanics make up one-third of the rosters of Major League Baseball teams, and a lot of MLB players come from overseas, shouldn't the MLB step up to the plate and deliver?
Say No to Arizona. Ask the MLB to deliver a statement against SB 1070 and move the 2011 All-Star game from Arizona.
For people who get into the economics of sports, events like this are a HUGE boost to the economy. You have tons of people coming in, staying in hotels, buying food, buying...well everything. Plus its a chance to showcase the city on a national stage.
If we were able get the Allstar game removed from Arizona trust me the city of Phoenix would feel it. In my opinion it would be the single best way to "boycott" Arizona for SD1070
