I'm sure I could look this up myself, but I thought I'd make a diary out of this. My question is about the racial profiling issue. See below...
Are the police going to be pulling people over or stopping them solely because they think they may be an illegal immigrant, or are the police only going to question the people who have already been pulled over/stopped for something else like speeding or any other crime. If it's the former, then I completely understand why people are furious about racial profiling, because that's exactly what it is. But in the latter case, I think it's totally acceptable. If the police pulled someone over at 3am for a broken tail-light, and later suspected he or she was drinking or had drugs in the car, then they should check. They are allowed to do that, right?
Yes, the police will probably only question people who look like Mexicans, but there are easy ways around being racist. If they pull over someone for speeding, and the person doesn't have a driver's license (or insurance, or registration), then it's reasonable to assume that they could be an illegal immigrant. But even at this point, the officer could ask some harmless questions to get a better idea of whether this person is illegal or not, and avoid making assumptions solely on race.
So, if it's the latter case, let Arizona fill up the courts. It will be their own undoing. If I was Mexican and living in Arizona I would get tired of getting questioned pretty fast, but that's how our stupid laws are written now. Personally, I think we could avoid this whole situation by just letting these people in if they want. They'll pay taxes just like everyone else. Also, our economy is based on consumption, so you'd think we'd want more consumers! We have tons of cheap houses they could fill up too. Am I wrong about all this?
