Excuse me if this has already been reported, but I just saw it pop up on my news feeds and am ecstatic that there is real momentum getting behind the Boycott Arizona drive
Los Angeles blanks Arizona Business
The City Council voted 13-1 to bar Los Angeles from conducting business with Arizona unless the law is repealed.
The proposal could affect investments and contracts worth as much as $52 million, including contracts for airport, harbor and trucking services, according to a report from the city's chief legislative analyst. That report recommends the council consider suspending travel, cutting contracts and refraining from making any new ones with Arizona-based companies.
Chalk one up to the steely will of the people to see that Justice is properly serviced when states go off the reservation and institutionalize racial profiling. According to the reporting, in reality, they may only be able to cut out $7-$8M worth of business due to the nature of different business deals, however the symbolism of this gesture can't be diminished.
Additional reporting on the breaking story with additional commentary
"Los Angeles the second-largest city in this country, an immigrant city, an international city. It needs to have its voice heard," Reyes told the LA Times. "As an American, I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport. If I come across an officer who’s having a bad day and feels that the picture on my ID is not me, I can be... deported, no questions asked. That is not American."
"We're being very methodical," Reyes said. "We're asking to have this assessed. The fact is, if we chose to ignore what happened in the South in the 60s, we'd still have the kind of discriminatory laws that were being proposed back then.
And pack your own lunch for the Suns-Lakers playoffs
"We're hoping the Lakers take two games in Arizona for the sweep," Hahn told NBCLA. "If you go, we're hoping you take your own snacks and won't buy things in Arizona."
