Here is an excellent comment brought to you by one man who cares to confront people with different idealogies by writing a letter to the editor of USA Today, which is what we all should be doing if we really wanted to move this country FORWARD!
Look at these two letters with completely opposite arguments. At least there are two. We need more of us to counter the talking points of the right, because often it's only THEIR talking point.
And for the progressives in this blog who think that Obama is to blame...
Remember, your sentiments are not only shared by the Republicans, and not only do they welcome your thoughts, they eagerly want you to continue to blame this administration and all Democrats in congress. You will help them get back into power. Thank you very much.
That is not to say that there is no blame on Obama. This is just to say: Do you want to move this country FORWARD? Or into the Republican Direction? Do you want a Republican "drill baby drill" adminstration or for the time being could you be content with centrist Obama until YOU find someone better?
But in order to find someone better, WE all need to do something very important, and that is: CONFRONT THE RIGHTWING DISINFORMATION MACHINE!!!
We will not elect more progressive candidates if people don't vote for them because they have been brainwashed by the Republicans and corporations!
Therefore, do as I do and please comment in news articles blogs, write letters to the editor, write emails to news organization setting the record straight. Do as this gentleman so adeptly does:
Damage of lax regulation
In all fairness, the government response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill cannot be compared to that during Hurricane Katrina. Katrina was a natural disaster, and our government had experience and expertise in dealing with hurricanes. The slow and inadequate response was within government control.
However, the Gulf oil spill is a man-made disaster based on the motive to produce profit. BP had the technology to prevent or at least mitigate this disaster with a more expensive valve, but it would have cost $500,000 and reduced its profits.
The government does not have superior technical knowledge or resources for dealing with this kind of disaster. We must rely on BP and the corporate world to take the necessary precautions to prevent this type of accident and to fix it when it breaks.
Some people want smaller government and fewer regulations. This disaster is what happens when smaller government relies on the corporate world to regulate itself and protect our environment.
