This is a breaking story
and is not yet confirmed. According to U.S.-based SITE Intelligence Group, an internet posting allegedly by al Qaeda Central says that Mustafa Abu al-Yazid, AKA Sheik Sa'id al-Masri, has died in a U.S. missile strike in the tribal areas of Pakistan.
This may refer to the recent attack that took place in South Waziristan, which happened in territory controlled by "Afghan Taliban" commander Maulvi Nazir. Some U.S. intelligence agencies also believe it to be true, according to
Dawn and
AFP
In addition to being considered the main conduit to Osama bin Laden, chief financial manager and a top al Qaeda Central leader often described as the #3 man, al-Yazid was also al Qaeda Central's commander in Afghanistan. His death, if true, would be a blow to the terrorist network and comes at a time when the U.S. is preparing to try and turn the tides in Afghanistan.
Also being reported is the death of the Taliban's #2 man in Kandahar province, assigned to counter the coming NATO offensive, who is said to have died in a separate air strike.
Update:
Sounds like it might have happened a week and a half ago in North Waziristan.
Al Qaeda's media arm has confirmed it.
