The polls have closed in two of the three states holding primaries today (and New Mexico will close within an hour). For a complete primer on what to look for this evening, you can get a refresher course either from my piece from Sunday Kos or this one from the folks at Swing State Project.
Oh, and I almost forgot that hot-as-a-pistol (or should it be...rifle?) primary for Alabama Ag Commissioner. Can't miss that one, either.
The highlights are:
- AL-Gov: Both the Democrats and Republicans have high-profile gubernatorial primaries. For the Dems, it is Artur Davis taking on Ron Sparks, and there will be a winner crowned tonight. On the Republican side, the end result tonight will almost assuredly be a runoff, as a quartet of Republicans work hard to play "King of the Mountain" on the right-wing fringe.
- AL-02 (R): Democratic freshman Bobby Bright will possibly learn the identity of his Republican challenger tonight, although it is not a lock, as a runoff here is certainly possible. Martha Roby has been the establishment choice, but she could get surprised by teabagger Rick Barber.
- AL-05: Democrats get to pick their opponent for turncoat Dem-turned-GOPer Parker Griffith (although a runoff is likely). On the GOP side, the question is whether Griffith has a home in the GOP. He could win outright tonight, but he could also be out of the running. Most likely outcome--another runoff.
- MS-01 (R): It is national Republicans versus Fox News (kinda). Former Fox News contributor Angela McGlowan tries to become the first African-American Republican in Congress since JC Watts left town, but an underfunded campaign means that establishment pick Alan Nunnelee (a state senator) might win without a runoff.
- NM-Gov (R): Pete Domenici Jr. had the most hype, but his campaign has gone absolutely nowhere. This looks to be a race between southern New Mexico D.A. Susana Martinez and former party chair Allen Weh. Lots of bucks have flown in this one at the last minute
