I just wanted to drop by for a few minutes and say a few words about our primary last night. First of all, thank you so very much for all of your support as we have discussed my campaign and the issues that matter in our district. We made it into a runoff and on July 13, voters in the 7th Congressional District of Alabama will make history by sending me to Congress. My message as always been : When I go to Congress, we all go to Congress.
We didn't have all the money. We didn't have all the endorsements. What we did have was grassroots support. We did not just campaign in my home county, which is the largest county. We campaigned from the Mississippi state line back and ran hard everywhere.
This was a campaign that thrived on good old fashioned blood, sweat and tears. With your continued support we will make history on July 13 and send the first African-American female from the State of Alabama to Congress.
We have worked hard reaching out to voters since we entered this race last year. We worked hard for our fair share of the vote by pounding on the pavement. We had a good run in not only the largest county but the smallest counties. We won the County with highest number of votes in the primary (Jefferson) and we won the County with the smallest number of votes (Clarke).
The key for us winning in this runoff is voter turnout. With a vote right after Memorial Day weekend voter turnout was low.We didn't have the most money in this race. We work really hard at getting votes out. People know us and know how hard we will work.
This seat needs someone who is a fighter for the voters of the 7th Congressional District. This is not a poor district this is a prosperous district. This district needs jobs and access to affordable health care. I am the candidate that has done that. I'm not just talking about it or asking folks to try it. We have plans for improving the quality of life in this entire district.
We need someone who can go take on Washington. I'm that person because I'm committed, strong and willing to make that sacrifice. I will listen to the concerns of voters in my district.
We feel really good about the results last night but we know that we must continue to take our message to the voters in this district that Shelia Smoot Is On Your Side.
Thank you for all of the contributions we have received on our Grassroots for Smoot Act Blue Page. We understand that times are tight, but we will not let you down. If you can donate $10 or $20.10 we will be most appreciative.
