I did a search and saw this has not been mentioned on Kos yet (at least not in diary form) From the AP article,
Seven seniors at La Quinta High School are facing disciplinary action for participating in a game called "Beat the Jew". The game involved some students playing the role of Nazis who blindfolded and dropped off other students playing Jews who must find their way back to the campus. The game had originally been advertised on facebook and 40 students signed up to play.
This is clearly insensitive and should not be acceptable behavior. On the other hand,I am not sure what disciplinary actions the school could or should take.
With all the back and forth on Israel, Gaza, etc. on the board I was surprised that this did not get discussed here. Whereas this is not directly related to the debates here, we have to be careful of how we discuss groups (e.g., Jews, Mexicans, Repbulicans, etc.) so as not to create negative attitudes toward others. I am glad to see that the La Quinta High School will hold a tolerance program next week.
Sadly, I found another article about the same game played at another high school in California. This is from the USA Tday in May:
Some high school students in the California desert have been chasing each other around, as they are known to do. But this involves a game they call "Beat the Jew," the Palm Springs Desert Sun tells us. School officials and police say no hate crime was committed in the pursuit, which involves a runner called "a Jew" being chased by "Nazis" in cars.
Students have apologized, said Desert Sands Unified School District Superintendent Sharon McGehee. They weren't disciplined because it happened after school and not on school property.
