Short diary about a law we are all familiar with.
So what do we make of these many recent events we encounter? Valdez's. West Viginia coal mine tragedies. Katrina's. Oil rig leaks. Even the 911 attacks.
Obviously they differ in many respects. Some man made. Others delivered by nature. And all share complexities. Getting oil from the bottom of the ocean floor or coal from the bowels of the land is not easy. Nor simple. Cat 5 hurricanes are rare and devastating. And assholes bent on suicide by forcing planes into buildings, well, how does one anticipate something like that?
But that's the point!
We have got to think outside of the box. Certainly as we put some of these events in our collective rear view mirror we must learn something from them.
No, we cannot prepare for everything, but we better concede that Murphy is in the building. And his law states that if something can go wrong it will. When it wants and usually at the most inopportune time.
After the likes of the San Francisco earthquake, numerous mining disasters (Sago just a few years ago!), the dust bowl, the Chicago fire (another Murphy!) the Exxon Valdez, or most anything short of an alien invasion, that anyone can stand around and say "we just didn't think this could happen" is an insult to us all. And this is from those paid to "think". CEO's, senators, safety experts, etc.! Let their short sighted heads roll.
Better to think like "Murphy"
