I am an atheist. There is no god, religion is bullcrap, and the bible is a book of fairy tales.
That's one hell of a campaign platform, right? I mean tons of people would support that, and want to vote for that, right?
Right?
Even though America has come a long way in some areas, in a lot of other areas, "certain" people will probably never be elected President of this nation. (Not just atheists, but an openly gay candidate for example.)
We saw a black President finally in 2008, and that was a great achievement. And while that was a large step forward for America, some of the other large steps in terms of electing a "different kind" of President that we need to take as a nation will probably be much harder.
Atheism is on the rise (and rightfully so) as science advances and allows us to reveal some of the mysteries of the world and the universe that caused earlier generations to fill in the gap with "god".
However even with all that being said, can you ever imagine an atheist Presidential candidate? Me either. That candidate would be destroyed by left right and center because its not "OK" to be an atheist in politics yet.
We have come a long way, but for those of us who are atheists, we don't really have a voice in the political system. It's sad to say, but I doubt we ever will in this WAY too religious nation.
