User 250000, who registered today, has a funny and somewhat charming name: "Twee D". (Self-referential self-deprecatory humor? Groundwork for slagging Dems? Who knows?) As usual with milestone registrations: welcome, and we hope you're not a troll. I'm just happy it's not one of those Firstname1234Lastname entries.
So I am feeling a little meta and historical.
I remember the day that User 100000 registered here in the summer of 2006 -- the day, in fact, that Ned Lamont was nominated for U.S. Senate, if memory serves. (Today was the day that Robert Byrd died. Milestones marked by bigger milestones.) If you check my UID, you may correctly suppose that I was lying in wait to be among the ones who could snag it before giving up and deciding that 99900 was good enough. The management, of course, reserved both that number and 100001, auctioning both off; the auction winner made of them a gift.
I just thought that this milestone of growth of the site ought to be marked now rather than waiting for jotter in the morning. It's an enormous achievement to bring so many people together. Let's hope we can make much of it.
What is this diary about? Memories of the growth of the netroots, I suppose. Or maybe not. As often happens, the commenters will decide what the diary is about -- potentially a quarter-million of them.
