As documented by a study just documented in Men's Health. Sure, that's not the usual venue for a discussion of patriotism, but the results confirm that Blue State values are American values.
In addition, it does provide food for thought as we go into the fourth of July weekend, especially about the nature of "real America."
Without further ado, here are the top 10 patriotic cities:
- Portland, OR
- Salt Lake City, UT
- Kansas City, MO
- Seattle, WA
- Tampa, FL
- Hartford, CT
- Minneapolis, MN
- St. Petersburg, FL
- Atlanta, GA
- Madison, WI
Arguably, the only "red" city on the list might be Salt Lake City. While most redstaters would give cities like Portland OR, Seattle, Hartford, Minneapolis, and Madison the boot, they are excellent representatives of Blue state values -- true blue American values.
Details over the fold.
As stated in the link, "How do you gauge patriotism?"
The measures used include:
A) The "percentage of registered voters who turned out for state and federal elections from 2004 to 2008".
B) "Money spent on military veterans per capita" (yes, spending matters)
C) "Percentage of residents who volunteer"
D) Percentage of residents who "participate in civic activities, and/or work with neighbors"
E) Sales of Fireworks
F) Sales of US Flags
Yes, these are arbitrary measures, but they do emphasize civic involvement and spending over the laissez-faire values of those who oppose us.
It's striking to see the number of Texas cities at the bottom of the list. Nevertheless, I also agree with the concluding sentence from the link:
there are no unpatriotic towns.
