I hope you enjoyed your Fourth of July – it was a beautiful weekend break here in North Carolina.
But the holiday was marred by the United States Senate, which cut off unemployment assistance for millions of Americans due to a filibuster by Senator Richard Burr. Washington is now on “vacation” as folks continue to be pushed closer to the edge. These benefits are a lifeline for people seeking to find work in the worst job market since the Depression and Senator Burr cast the deciding vote to block the extension.
Sign our petition today to demand Burr end his filibuster of these unemployment extensions!
This isn’t simply a lack of compassion by Senator Burr. It’s very bad public policy that could lead to more foreclosures and damage the recovery effort. Unemployment benefits pay for essential services like food, rent, and car insurance – and every dollar spent helps to spur real economic growth.
This is a choice by Republicans like Burr to cut off essential lifelines in order to win a cheap political battle.
Simply put: it’s everything that is wrong with Washington.
Send Senator Burr a powerful message by demanding he end his filibuster:

Right now, there are five unemployed men and women for every one job opening.
That leads to 400,000 unemployed workers in North Carolina who Senator Burr is mortgaging to benefit his political future. Even John McCain’s former top economic advisor agrees that extending this aid is essential to getting the economy on track.
