New polling from Gallup indicates that Barack Obama's approval amongst independents is down to 38%, and down 16% since July. of 2009. During that same period, Democratic support is down 9%, from 90% to 81%, and Republican support is actually up to 12%. While that is up 1% from April of this year, it is down 9% from July of 2009.
Obama's approval ratings are about on par from where previous presidents have been. Ronald Reagan has an approval rating of 42% in his second year in office. Bill Clinton had a 43% rating and Jimmy Carter had a 40% rating.
Overall, 46% of Americans approve of the way Obama is handling his job. That is a point above his lowest weekly average.
