I haven't written a diary in a few days, mainly because I've been busy planning a fundraiser for our Progressive Democrat running for Congress in Kentucky's 5th District, Jim Holbert.
No, this fundraiser wasn't a $2,500 per plate, five course meal. It was simply grilled burgers and hot dogs, baked beans and a homemade cake. It wasn't filled with lobbyists or special interest donors. It was people powered. That's what Jim Holbert's campaign is about.
Check out Jim's speech at the fundraiser last night, courtesy of Jim Pence at Hillbilly Report:
Jim Holbert might not be loaded down with lobbyist money like his opponent, Republican Hal Rogers. He may not have a personal fortune to use in the campaign. But he does have the support of thousands of Kentuckians (and people across the country) who are eager for something better.
As I have noted in numerous previous diaries, the 5th Congressional District is extremely poor. Many of the 29 counties in the district have poverty rates nearing or exceeding 40% (and in this depressed economy, I wouldn't be surprised if a few were exceeding 50%). Our region needs better representation if we are to move forward.
If you want to see more and better Democrats in the United States Congress, we need your help to get Jim Holbert elected to represent the people of Southeast Kentucky. We need to raise at least $5,000 before the end of this month. It is absolutely critical that we have the finances on hand to take on Hal Rogers.
Please help us by making a contribution via Jim Holbert's ActBlue page. If you can't give, please be sure to forward this diary to someone who can.
As always, go 'like' Jim's page on Facebook and follow him on Twitter. Thank you!
