President Barack Obama is in Chicago today to give a big financial and morale boost to the Alexi Giannoulias campaign, by calling Giannoulias a "fighter" for the people and saying that Giannoulias is running for the "right reasons."
"He’s not doing this to help lobbyists. He’s not doing it to help special interests," Obama told a crowd at the Palmer House Hilton who donated between $1,000 and $2,400 to Giannoulias' Senate campaign.
Later, Obama added, "You can trust him. You can count on him."
"We need fighters like Alexi in Washington because, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, we’ve got a lot of work to do," Obama said. "The last few years have been incredibly challenging for the United States."
President Barack Obama is expected to raise over $1 million dollars for the Giannoulias campaign and that figure could rise because of the President's glowing words. The Giannoulias campaign is now gaining momentum as the campaign shifts into high gear after the Labor Day holiday. The timing is just right for Giannoulias as the wind is now at his back and Mark Kirk faces stiff head winds.
Mark Kirk's ex-wife spoke out recently, telling Chicago magazine, that she fears that "he is too influenced by a "Svengali figure" in his life—a former staffer named Dorothy "Dodie" McCracken." Among his other troubles, Kirk exaggerated a childhood incident, exaggerating his military record concerning an award that Kirk did not personally receive, and exaggerating his service in Iraq.
Mark Kirk also has the burden of defending his voting record, supporting the entire George W. Bush agenda for eight years and opposing the Obama agenda for the past nineteen months.
That is, of course, in between defending his lies about his past.
Alexi Giannoulias, on the hand, is committed to supporting the Obama agenda of change. With the margin in the Senate becoming increasingly important to pass progressive legislation, electing candidates like Giannoulias is essential. Our future belongs in the capable hands of Alexi Giannoulias, and away from the failed George W. Bush policies that was enthusiastically supported by Congressman Mark Kirk.
Thank you Mr. President, for coming to town and touting the progress on the economic front being made in such places as the Ford plant on Torrence Avenue in Chicago. And thank you for supporting our friend, Alexi Giannoulias.
