Hey folks,
This just crossed my Facebook page via Equality California:
URGENT: Thus far Governor Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Brown have refused to defend Prop. 8 in federal court, but today the supporters of Prop. 8 started calling and emailing the Governor and Attorney General to defend this hateful measure. If Prop. 8's supporters are able to get the Governor and Attorney General to defend Prop. 8, our wins in the case thus far will be in jeopardy. Please contact Schwarzenegger and Brown ASAP and tell them to continue to not defend Prop. 8! Ask your friends and family to contact them, too!
The link to send an email is Tell Governor Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Brown to stand firm against hate! You can also call both the Governor's and the AG's offices:
Call the Governor:
916.445.2841
Call the Attorney General:
916.324.5437
One of the people who responded to EQCA's thread on Facebook says that he called and spoke to the Governor's office, and that they are getting swamped with calls from H8ers demanding that he defend Prop 8 in the appeals courts. (Obviously these folks didn't get the memo that they're almost certain to lose on the merits if the Ninth does hear the case, but that's not the point. We need Schwarzenegger's and Brown's unequivocal support here, and public opinion (misguided as it is) can be compelling for any politician.)
I've spoken with both offices and they confirm that they are getting hammered with calls. Brown's spokeswoman told me that he is going to stand firm - "He's very strong in his beliefs about this, sir" - but as someone who's had to work incoming phones, it's always good to hear from people who are on the side of doing the right thing. So please - even if it's just to give them a morale boost, give Jerry's (and the Governor's) office a call, so they can hear a friendly voice more often than just one out of every 20 or 30 calls they have to answer today.
Thanks, folks. I really appreciate all that you are doing for me and my husband and our friends and families on this issue.
EDIT: Wow, the Rec list? Thanks, folks! :)
