Thanks to the Corporate Media and the unrelenting Right Wing Noise Machine of "Drudge-Rush-Fox" there is a blur between news and propaganda.

In American media, there is no line between information and entertainment and the truth suffers for it.

Americans increasingly are convinced — incorrectly — that President Barack Obama is a Muslim, and a growing number are thoroughly confused about his religion.

Nearly one in five people, or 18 percent, said they think Obama is Muslim, up from the 11 percent who said so in March 2009, according to a poll released Thursday. The proportion who correctly say he is a Christian is down to just 34 percent.

The largest share of people, 43 percent, said they don't know his religion, an increase from the 34 percent who said that in early 2009.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corporation poll timed for release during President Obama's birthweek shows that more than a quarter of people don't believe Obama was born in the United States.

According to the poll, 11 percent of respondents said they believed that the President was "definitely not" born in the United States, while 16 percent said that Obama was "probably not" born in the country.

Meanwhile, 29 percent responded that the President was "probably" born in the U.S. and 42 percent of those surveyed said they "have absolutely no doubts" about Obama's American birthplace.

These issues started as soon as Barack Obama announced his run for president back in early 2007.  These numbers should have started falling but they are not, they are growing.

What the Hell is wrong with the American public?

Or, what the Hell is wrong with the American media?

Technology can archive, retrieve, manipulate and communicate more information, faster than ever before in human history, but the public seems to be losing their collective common sense for nonsense.  It's a paradox of the Information Age.

It is easy to blame the Republican party but that is like blaming the rooster for crowing.  That's just what they do.  They propagate lies.  Remember Bill Clinton's body count, Al Gore's Internet invention and John Kerry's phony Purple Hearts?

In my opinion, the current batch of right wing nonsense resonates because it is carried along by ingrained racist stereotypes held onto by conservative white people and it has been aggravated during an anxious economic period.

The full blame for the continuing ignorance belongs to the American corporate media that is unwilling to address it.  They all know how the Right Wing Noise Machine works but they do not want to discuss it.

It's time for major media figures, like Couric, Sawyer and Williams, to become brave and stand up for their profession and tell the truth about about is news and what is propaganda.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
Are you sure you want to remove this diary from your hotlist?
Are you sure you want to remove your recommendation? You can only recommend a diary once, so you will not be able to re-recommend it afterwards.
Rescue this diary, and add a note:

Choose where to republish this diary. The diary will be added to the queue for that group. Publish it from the queue to make it appear.

You must be a member of a group to use this feature.

Add a quick update to your diary without changing the diary itself:

(The diary will be removed from the site and returned to your drafts for further editing.)
(The diary will be removed.)
Are you sure you want to save these changes to the published diary?
