For those not old enough to remember Martin Luther King,  or the original 1963 march on Washington,  here are several videos for your viewing recollection. Consider this a brief ode to the Philosopher  Buffoon.

Video one of beyond the Beckoning: Martin Luther King's Final Campaign Remembered
for his efforts to help millions of poor people on the original 1963 March on Washington.

Next,  a brief  video detour outside the Twilight Zone universe known as Fox News.

Sharpton: Beck, Palin Distorting MLK's Dream
The Rev. Al Sharpton says Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin are "distorting" what Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech was about

And Finally we finish this brief primer with the spawn of Bill O’reilly Stephen Colbert, putting it all into comedic perspective, as is appropriate.

Glenn-Livid: Glenn Beck's Rally
Besides the date, the location, the march and the threat of assassination, Glenn Beck's rally has nothing to do with Martin Luther King Jr.

A Postscript: it occurred to me that tomorrow’s March for whatever is similar to wataching lemmings go off the cliff. From the Urban dictionary definition.

  1. A member of a crowd with no originality or voice of his own. One who speaks or repeats only what he has been told.
  1. A small, short-tailed rodent which lives in the tundra. It is said that large groups of these animals come together every so often to jump off of a cliff. On the contrary, they fall off quite by accident. It is also said that Disney filmed them doing this by moving them to unfamiliar territory.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

What a breathtaking concept, given that Beck IS for Dummies.

Spray tons of carcinogens into the ocean to hide petroleum spewed from a hastily-drilled hole from a greedy corporation, but don't smoke pot.

and Glen Beck's rally doesn't even shine their shoes.

Although I never met Martin Luther King, Jr., I did meet Rev. Ralph Abernathy after he spoke at Trinity Church.  I remember he thanked me when I shook his hand, and I responded by saying, "No, thank you."  But I was young, and gushing.

Beck thinks he has that following.  What he doesn't know is that the people who marched on Washington weren't there to hear MLK speak, they were there for a cause greater than any one man.

What 'cause' is Beck hoping to promote, other than the,  "I have a plan, and it's all about me, so pay attention because then I'll be famous."

  •  The purpose of Glenn Beck, like all (0+ / 0-)

Republican bloviators, is to distract attention from real power, the power of kleptocracy to steal trillions of dollars from us by getting as many of us as possible to vote against our own interests. (I am indebted to Douglas Adams for the germ of this theory of politics.)

One of the important matters that everybody has been distracted from is the first part of Dr. King's speech, before I Have a Dream. That's the bounced check part, about all of the promises made to Black folk over the last 150 years and more, all of which were dishonored when presented for payment. (Not just Blacks, of course. Most of the promises to 'most everybody.)

The really curious thing is that Beck has succeeded in getting our attention away from what is important by raving on about Reparations, about taking away all of the White folks' houses and land and everything else built by Black slave labor, or bought since then with money from Black slave labor, right down to the clothes on their backs. Beck is trying to scare Whites by saying that Obama is coming for everything they own, and will end up enslaving them.

So of course we all say, of course we won't. Why, we aren't going to take anything from you. And all of the old checks can be dishonored again.

No, the truth is that we are going to have to take a little something from them, and from ourselves, too. Enough to pay for the wars that many of theirs and some of ours promoted, enough to make Medicare and Social Security whole, enough to repair the roads and bridges and schools, enough to educate every poor child who is willing to do the work to get out of poverty.

Then we get to take on the hard problems of Global Warming, energy independence, and unhollowing our economy so that there are jobs for all, so that all share in the fruits of our increasing productivity, so that all can spend and invest in our children's future, and make those jobs worthwhile for our employers, so that there is a social contract that includes all of us.

  •  Beck is a .... (0+ / 0-)

remnant of the holy white haired male patriarchy. As a class they are losing their grip on power as the minorities soon become the majority in the good old USA. My feeling is that part of their grasping for power and influence is the same as the Wall street Masters of the Universe.  No amount of money is enough and the quest for power never ends. Money corrupts and power corrupts absoutely. Was that Machivelli? And when your a clown the corruption is almost laughable if there weren't so many lemmings (or dittoheads) looking for a leader with a simplistic slogan.

    Beck Rally Stirs Passion
A 'Restoring Honor' rally by broadcaster Glenn Beck is drawing the masses to Washington, as the AP's Lee Powell found. But it is also drawing controversy from some blacks, who say the time and place of the event is wrong.
