Cash-Strapped DCCC To Cut Weakest Democratic Incumbents From Funding
In the next two weeks, Democratic leaders will review new polls and other data that show whether vulnerable incumbents have a path to victory. If not, the party is poised to redirect money to concentrate on trying to protect up to two dozen lawmakers who appear to be in the strongest position to fend off their challengers.
"We are going to have to win these races one by one," said Representative Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, conceding that the party would ultimately cut loose members who had not gained ground.
This is what happens when you spite a huge segment of your base and refuse to fight for Democratic principles.
Folks refuse to give you money.
It's going to be a rough cycle.
I think the parameters of deciding who will get funding from the DNC, DSCC, DCCC will be based more than just on 'polls'. It will involve lobbyists, corporate influence and the hierarchy of the Democratic Party Machine, all of whom take a dim view of liberals and progressives.
In the Senate, it won't surprise me at all to see many millions dumped into Blanche Lincoln's fight to retain her seat, even though she has tremendous advantage in cash on hand vs her Repug challenger. Meanwhile, in NH I doubt the Hodes campaign will see much more than token support from the DSCC.
This is how the Democratic Party rolls nationally: they support Blue Dogs and DINOs, because the corporate influences and lobbyists are stronger. They'll find any excuse to cut out support for liberals/progressives, and are out of touch with anyone to left of center. The DSCC and DCCC will throw everything they can at keeping Blue Dogs and DINOs in their seats.
The hierarchy of the national Democratic Party Machine has clearly tried since the time of George McGovern to undermine and destroy the liberal/progressive movement. This cycle is just an extension of that trend, and Rahm Emanuel is just one of the latest iterations who harbor dislike and outright hatred for the left.
It's been a key part of this political process inside the Democratic Party machine for 40 years, this active dislike because of McGovern and Dukakis. It's reared it's ugly head against centrists like Jimmy Carter, Teddy Kennedy, Walter Mondale, as well the more leftist Howard Dean, Paul Wellstone, the organizations like the House CPC and CBC.
The active dislike for liberals and progressives from this White House has come home to roost.
So don't be too surprised to find your local liberal/progressive incumbents in the House are being cut off at the knees by the DCCC, even if their polling numbers are decent. Be prepated to ante up in money and time to help them out.
As in other election cycles, the amount of money given to Blue Dogs and darlings of the DLC by the DCCC will outpace the money given to liberals/leftists, irrespective of the polling data. Even though he's not up for election, Ben Nelson got $460K from the DNC to obstruct Health Care Reform.
The nearly shrill and desperate calls I got from the DNC, DCCC and DSCC have stopped here, I guess they finally got the message. I give to candidates directly, based upon what they stand for. I very politely have told them 'no'.
Support your local liberals/progressives directly: I have and will continue to do so, to the best of my ability. Hard to do when almost out of money, but there are other ways of supporting candidates.
In this cycle, it's more than just Democrats versus Republicans. It's liberals vs Blue Dogs and progressives vs DINOs. The results of November may change the make up of Congress in more ways than just D vs R counts.
