This is just too good not to share with you. Apparently, a certain Phil Davison ran for the Republican nomination for the position of county treasurer (Stark County, Ohio), when he made the presentation linked after the jump, which caused considerable snickering on the internets.
Here it is in all its awesomeness.
For those of you without Flash, this dude makes an impassioned plea for his nomination, alternating between screaming (he manages to yell that he has a Master's degree in communication), jumping, crying, meekly pausing to read the script, and not saying anything concrete whatsoever.
Here's PBS coverage of the speech, where it is noted that
Phil Davison is a councilman in the village of Minerva, Ohio, population 3,934. He has four degrees from the University of Akron — two bachelors degrees, in history and sociology, and two masters degrees, in communication and public administration. He’s worked in factories, at the local Target and, for eight years, as a bailiff at the Stark County Court of Common Pleas. He left that position last year, and has been unable to find work since.
Also, the guy says he's a Tea Party sympathizer... but somehow also a liberal.
So, what's the lesson here? People say that there is anger. Here's the anger. People say Republicans are motivated. Here's a motivated Republican. However, somehow this motivated and angry Republican just falls a little short of awe-inspiring. If anything, I kinda feel sorry for the guy - he's broke, hasn't had a full-time job in a while, and all that. Also the video shows a real, breathing person with low income and factory work experience who mysteriously is a Republican. Oh, yes... so what's the lesson? It just may be that, the drama (see above) and media hype notwithstanding, if enough of us do enough quiet and boring things (which won't get you instant Internet notoriety) for the local Democratic candidates - donate, phonebank, knock on doors, help get out the vote, the - z0mg! - drama of this election will end up contained. We may lose a few Blue Dog seats in the Congress... but I don't think the departure of several cerulean canids will be much lamented.
I think it was Jack Handy from SNL who said, "It takes a big man to cry. It takes a bigger man to laugh at that man." I don't think Jack had seen Glenn Beck when he said it though. And... Phil Davison didn't get the Republican nomination for dog catcher county treasurer. Too bad.
