I believe all Americans have the right to organize and be involved in our political process. How ever I see some major conflict of interests here, she solicits donations to her group Liberty Central with this as their mission:
Mission:
Founded in 2009, Liberty Central is a nonprofit organization designed to promote education, civil discourse, and activism focused on protecting core founding principles of the United States.
Values Statement:
Liberty Central is led by a principled and dedicated team that actively listens to others and creatively shares our passion for Liberty. We operate in a fun-loving environment that produces informative, inspirational, responsive, and timely resources to make a positive impact in our country. While we are non-partisan, we are constitutionally-minded and will always refer to this Values Statement while working with and for each other.
Now I am sure she would not even think about asking her husband to use his position as a Supreme Court Justice to rule on any matter that came before the Supreme Court that involved one of the donors to her "grass roots" group Liberty Central.
I am sure she will be posting a list of ALL people that contribute money to her group so the American public will be able to cross check any cases that may come before the Supreme Court so Justice Thomas will be able to recuse himself, so that all Americans will know that the decision he makes will be based on merit rather than money donated to Mrs Thomas favorite charity, her own.
I have no problem with spouses having careers of their own, the majority of couples have two different sources of income, but then most spouses are not married to Judges or Justices that have lifetime appointments on the Federal courts that make rulings that will affect every American, like Justice Clarence Thomas has and will continue to do in the coming years and decades.
It leaves open the appearance of a conflict of interest, if the Koch brothers make a substantial donation to Liberty Central and then a case involving them happens to end up at the SCOTUS will Justice Thomas recude himself?
What about Massey and his mining company? With all the problems of buying state Judges, and his companies mining disasters, if he makes a donation to Liberty Central will Justice Thomas recuse himself or will he sit in judgement?
I am sorry I realize this is a opinion but she is not running a bakery she is running a political action committee for the sole purpose of getting Republican or even dare I say "TEA Party" candidates elected. Hardly a non-partisian issue.
I realize Judges and even Justices have political leanings that is why the President that selected them did choose them, but this active political action committee of Virginia Thomas has taken this to an all new level, this is in your face donate money to my group, lot's of money travel and advertising is expensive and so is the salary of all the people that Liberty Central have hired.
How much money is Virgina Thomas paying herself and how mush does it subsidize a sitting Justice of the Supreme Court she may not be selling the Supreme Court but this is about as close to the edge as I have ever seen in my lifetime.
If this isn't against the law it should be.
