Wow. It's just one twist after another. Here's the most recent of them (and there have already been two today!)
Turns out Deal's daughter lied on her and her husband's bankruptcy petition to protect Deal during the GOP primary campaign! I swear, I can't make this stuff up.
From the AJC,
When Nathan Deal filed personal disclosure statements in the U.S. Congress, he described himself as a "partner" in a "family business" with his daughter and son-in-law.
When Carrie Deal Wilder and her husband, Clint, filed a bankruptcy petition last year, however, they described themselves as the "100 percent stockholder" of Wilder Outdoors, the sporting goods store they opened in 2006 in Habersham County. Her father, by then a candidate for governor, was mentioned nowhere in documents the couple filed with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Gainesville.
So, clearly, there is a lie here. Either Deal lied on his financial disclosure statements, again (this will be like the tenth thing he's been called out for on his financial disclosure forms so far.) Or his daughter and son-in-law purposefully lied on their bankruptcy petition to protect Deal. Hmm, which one could it be?
From further down in the article,
Documents examined by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution suggest, however, that Deal’s role in the failed business went beyond that of simply a co-signer on a series of business loans.
It also is clear that the omissions in the Wilders’ bankruptcy filings — whether inadvertent or intentional — insulated Deal from political fallout during a hard-fought Republican primary campaign. The Wilders declared bankruptcy in July 2009, two months after Deal launched his campaign for governor.
I asked a few days ago if you thought there was a coverup. And, well, the more we learn, the more twists and turns there are in this Deal financial scandal, the more it looks like the Deal family purposefully misled/lied to either the bankruptcy court or on Deal's financial disclosure forms to cover up this 2.5 million dollar debt.
Just...wow.
Roy Barnes has more than just a shot to win this thing. Tide has more than turned against Deal. Heck, just take a look at Luckovich's cartoon for tomorrow morning.
