What a fun rally that is planned, so it sounds like. I almost wish I was going. I'm also tired of the crazed opinions from the fringe elements of the GOP. Nothing ... absolutely nothing like it even a decade ago. It truly makes me ill to hear the same, stale mantras repeated ad nauseam.
We get it. We know how much the far right hates Obama. However, no one has taken America away from anyone! There is no Socialism, Communism, Marxism here! Move to Russia, Venezuela or China if you want to get a dose of ISM's, then get back with us.
Say what you want about Jon Stewart, but he's far more than a comedian. I've watched him enough to see he isn't afraid of the right or left ~ and he's not afraid to ask his guests uncomfortable questions. After the 'funny part' of the show, Stewart gets down to business on issues that matter to most Americans.
Note: I love the author of the following book, "Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe Is Hijacking America." His article promoting Stewart's movtive for the rally tugs at my heart stings because we certainly think alike. Here's a snippet that makes any sane person want to start planning a trip for this rally!
Editor's note: John P. Avlon is a CNN contributor and senior political columnist for The Daily Beast. He is the author of "Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe Is Hijacking America."
The Rally to Restore Sanity is slated for October 30, the weekend before Election Day, on the Washington Mall.
Among the signs suggested for the rally:
-- "I disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure you're not Hitler"
-- "9/11 was an outside job"
-- "Got Competence?"
-- "I'm not afraid of Muslims, Tea Partiers, Socialists, Immigrants, Gun Owners or Gays ... but I am scared of spiders."
-- "Take it Down a Notch For America"
In the week since the Rally to Restore Sanity was announced, more than 100,000 people have signed up on Facebook (not exactly a scientific measure of success but a good gauge of interest), and more than 900,000 people have watched the announcement on the Comedy Central.
