It's been a while since we checked in on this year's most diverting race, that between Republican Dan Maes and former Republican-current Constitution Party candidate, Tom Tancredo.
One part of the story is just kind of sad.
DENVER – Colorado GOP gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes reported raising only $14,000 in the past two weeks, leaving political observers wondering how he can continue to the November election.
American Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo reported raising $120,000 and Democrat John Hickenlooper raised $218,000, according to reports filed with the Colorado Secretary of State's office.
But he's not letting his measly fundraiser keeping him from coming out swinging, wildly and crazily, against the guy on the ladder rung above him.
In a radio interview on KHOW yesterday, he called third-party candidate and infamous immigration fear-monger Tom Tancredo an "illegal immigrant" in the gubernatorial race.
"You know, I went through the system," Maes said on the Caplis & Silverman Show. "We've got an illegal immigrant in the system right now. And it's a minor party candidate, who didn't go through the system. And he went in the side door at the last minute. Now he's trying to take a job away from someone who earned it."
"And he cheated his way in the back door," Maes added, as the hosts laughed.
Nice analogy. Just when you start feeling kind of sorry for the guy, he turns all racist on you. The grand UN Bicycle Plot was almost endearingly nutty, but there's nothing good to say about this, aside from the ongoing diversion Maes creates.
According to TPM's current poll average, Dem John Hickenlooper is leading with 47.2%, followed by Tancredo with 27.8% and Maes at 19.9%.
