The Bicycle Taliban - a bunch of "Extermeists" have invaded Santa Rosa California. The Tea Party, Car Party, Median Party, I dunno - some party type people are going to save us from these cretins.

Santa Rosa California is doing a pilot project to put in a 'Bicycle Boulevard' on Humboldt Avenue in that City. A Bike Boulevard is basically a street - not a bike path, or a street with a bike lane - designed for bike traffic. This is frequently done with calming treatments like traffic circles, removal of stop signs, and often by cul-de-sacing the street in various places to discourage through automobile traffic in order to make it bicycle centric and divert faster auto traffic to nearby primary arterials. Often this happens because autos are bypassing the arterial to use a residential street that is favored by cyclists, but they drive on that residential street over the speed limit.

A classic example is the Ellen Fletcher Bike Boulevard on Bryant Street in Palo Alto. There are several cul-de-sacs where only bikes can pass, limiting Bryant to local traffic only. Riding down Bryant you can frequently see Elementary School children riding to school on what is an extremely safe street, blocks away from high speed and poorly shouldered Alma Street. Basically - Bryant is awesome. And frankly, it's a very desireable address - the lack of through traffic makes the street very quiet and property values there are up.

Santa Rosa has some people who pretty much like to cut through Humboldt who don't see it this way. And they are letting you know!

      Salt Lake City, for one. Of course, locally it is seen as somewhere to the left of center compared to the surrounding hinterlands. On a national scale, not so much. Still, we have an embarrassment of bicycle route goodness here, and a courteous populace of drivers to boot. And a number of outlying towns and counties host some organized rides that draw thousands of riders, such as this one although I'll admit it had to change venues last year because it kind of wore out its welcome after many years of riders riding more than 2 abreast. But its new home is welcoming.

    ....whether national or local is cause for tricorner hats and co-opting the American Revolution because every such action represents an imminent threat to democracy itself. Bicycling does NOT help our oil industry and gives people the communistic idea that they can propel themselves over city streets. If we make it safe for them, they will only want to turn Santa Rosa into Beijing, which we actually like now in a way because the Chinese government is such an admirable capitalistic oligarchy, but you know what we mean --it's bad somehow: exterminists OUT of Santa Rosa!

    British Petroleum: I think that means it's foreign oil.

  •  The bicycle friendly street designs are very (14+ / 0-)

    effective and much needed.  Here in Maryland just this week the Green Party candidate for the Senate died  after being hit by an SUV and then today (although not in the US) the man who won the Race Across America five times was killed  after being hit by a car while he was on a training ride.

    We really need to figure out a way to keep cyclists safer in the US - the death rate is much lower for cyclists in most EUropean countries even though there are many more cyclists on the roads.  Perhaps it is because there are more cyclists on the roads that European drivers are more aware of them.  Safety in numbers?

      In France, it seems to me the drivers expect and accept cyclists on the road.
      I think that everyone has to take driving lessons before getting licensed to drive a car too.

      Education matters, it's one of the E's that are rated when a town qualifies as a Bike Friendly Community.

          in the city not the burbs. There are on some streets more bikes then cars. Cars have learned to share the roads with bikes. We don't have any streets yet that are only bikes but have urban corridors which run along the river and connect neighborhoods and only walkers and bikers can use them.  My husband bikes to work 7 miles using mainly the corridor.  

          We also have bike routes which keep you off the really busy thoroughfares where the big nasty SUV's and other car communters use as ways to get out of the city and back to the burbs. As someone who does both but mainly bikes in town, it has become second nature to share the streets with the bikes.

          There are bike shops sprouting up who customise bikes for serious transportation and hauling. They are designs available for hauling every thing from your kids to pizzas for commercial delivery. Bike trucks lol.

            all over east/southeast asia. these days, not quite so much, but if you build the frames sturdy enough, and gear them lot enough, they can haul an insane amount of goods.

    ...we've had bike lanes in Chicago for some time now on many of the arterials. I suspect evolution (you do believe in evolution, doncha?) will weed out the cyclists who fail to follow the traffic controls. We've also had traffic "calming", as well, on the side streets, but in the personal opinion of this retired traffic engineer, it's a more dubious "improvement". YMMV.

      A hypothetical main thoroughfare, let's say North-South, and a bunch of cross-streets, East-West.  Some of those cross-streets are intended for automobile through-traffic, some are intended primarily for bicyclists and local traffic (people coming & going to/from homes in those neighborhoods).

      Right:

      Mark the car-unfriendly streets at the intersections so drivers don't turn into them and then get stuck at arbitrary culs-de-sac and have to turn around.  This keeps the through-traffic cars out of those neighborhoods entirely, and channels them to the car-oriented streets.

      Wrong:

      Don't mark them, instead let drivers find their way into them and have to do multi-point turns to get the hell out.  This doesn't "discourage" automobiles, it pisses people off arbitrarily, and their pissed-offedness will cause them to drive angrily on the way out, which is unsafe for pedestrians.    

      Right:

      Slow down the cars by introducing gentle curves such as by building out the sidewalk area with trees and such, alternating left and right.

      Wrong:

      Speed bumps, which a) can cause damage to emergency vehicles notably fire engines with long wheelbases, and b) cause serious pain to elderly and disabled persons driving or riding in vehicles over those bumps even at slow speeds.

      Right:

      The roads that are intended for cars are designed to enable steady passage at speeds @ 25 miles per hour.   Steady speed makes a huge difference in fuel economy.  I'm using a ScanGauge and I can see the difference in my instant and average MPG.  

      Wrong:

      Make those roads stop-and-go all the way, and worse yet, unpredictably so.  This only results in repeat acceleration and braking, which wastes serious amounts of fuel.  

      Right:

      Proper street lights along roads that are intended primarily for bikes and pedestrians.  Modern street lighting can improve public safety without causing light pollution that interferes with astronomical research facilities.  The entire road and sidewalk area should be illuminated, and dark shadowy areas eliminated.

      Wrong:

      Quaint ideas about the romance of walking or biking in the dark or almost-dark, which leads to assaults and rapes and robberies, as well as increased risk of accidents.  

      Right:

      Roads intended for bicycles have to be maintained to a higher standard than roads intended for automobiles.  The surface should be smoother, it should be cleaned more often to prevent accumulations of grit and leaves that become skid hazards for bikes.   Roads intended for cars at least need to be maintained well enough to allow smooth passage at the posted speed.  

      Wrong:

      Neglect of street cleaning and road surface maintenance, particularly on bike roads, on the basis that they get less traffic.

      When you see a whole bunch of "wrong" in a street design, it's damn clear that the people who designed it were either incompetent or were intending to make the experience of using the road unpleasant to the point of being punitive.

      When you see a bunch of "right" in a street design, it's clear that the municipality cares enough to think it through, and this contributes to the sense of the public commons as a welcoming and friendly space.

      I've seen both kinds, all around the Bay Area.

      Ideal safety condition for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, involves a speed gradient from slowest (pedestrian) immediately adjacent to buildings or property lines, to faster (bicycles), and then automobile parking (barrier between automobile lanes and cyclist & pedestrian lanes respectively), and then fastest (automobile traffic lanes) at the middle.  

      Grassy strips between lanes are only useful for safety at speeds above 30 miles per hour, otherwise they are wasteful as hell, both of space, and of the water to maintain the unnecessary grass.  Better, provide a narrower strip in between, with trees and non-lawn landscaping.  The trees will mitigate CO2 emissions from the automotive traffic somewhat, as well as serving as a barrier between oncoming lanes.

    Is this what it was like being in Germany during the late '20's and early '30's?  Jeezus, the fucking "Bicycle Taliban."  These people will sit back and let their leaders assrape the Constitution blind, but heaven forbid someone take out a few stop signs and put in a few cul-de-sacs in their neighborhood.  This is so fucking depressing...
