It’s not like Corporation woke up this morning, got out of bed, took a shower, sipped coffee and then jumped in the car to go to work. Corporation didn’t get a paycheck last week and budget it out for her family. Corporation didn’t take the kids to soccer practice, talk with his friends about holiday plans, or even read the paper.
Because Corporation isn’t a person. And it’s time to stop treating Corporations like they are.
Ok, so maybe corporations are made UP of people. Yes, I’ll give that to you—people work there. But, those individuals already have protection of free speech. And also, isn’t their ability to vote effectively as a block already protected by the Constitution? On top of that, last time I checked, the individuals who work for corporations have vastly different opinions, political stances, lives and interests.
So why would we ever give the company that they work for the right to invest endless amounts of money into a single voice?
Today’s ruling allowing Corporations to invest uncharted amounts of money in their political interests is devastating. It’s like five of the “best” decision makers in this country forgot about common sense. Let’s face it. We’re all angry and disappointed. Any American would be.
Congressman Grayson has taken a step in the right direction. We need to do everything we can to support his bills. But we’ve got to do our share.
So what fits into your routine? Can you take time to make the call to your Senator/Congressperson and demand reform? Tell them that last time you checked Corporation wasn’t chatting with you on the bus this morning on her way to the daily grind.
It’s time to stop treating Corporations like people.
