So, I was on Huffpo just now watching Ellen's impassioned plea for our Society to wake up about homophobia and the bullying that has permeated through our entire American Culture. Through my tears, I flipped back to the front page only to see an update to the Rick Sanchez "Jon Stewart is a bigot" drama story, and there was a breaking news banner above his mug: "Rick Sanchez Fired".
This is amazing! And I'm glad that, for once, the "other"-speak was called out and held accountable. This is exactly what needs to be happening, CONSISTENTLY, in order to ensure that our collective compass is re-calibrated.
Those of you who read my posts know that I truly believe that our highest offices of governance set a real and direct example from which the rest of us can take as a degree of appropriateness. After all, those in our Government are there to represent the rest of us! There is an expectation that they will behave in a manner that is deserving of the rest of us. At least, that is an expectation that I have. I also believe that these offices had been severely, reapeatedly, abused by bushCO and their example was beyond horrific. I believe that they dirtied us all, as a people, by the way they behaved. Our national reputation was sullied by them. The CONservatives in Congress now, and those "gunning" for the own seats, aren't any better though. They are corporate-owned greed mongers who care not a wit about anyone, except themselves. Not only do the Dems (and President Obama) have a lot to clean up with the legislative agenda, but we have a lot of work to do in setting the proper example for behavior too.
It's ironic that the party of "moral values" is the same party that thinks nothing of bullying, name-calling, insulting, lying, cheating and stealing. All the while, in their usual narcissistic and hypocritical fashion, they're the first to scream as shrill as they can that they're being persecuted when they get caught doing so.
It really has to stop. Sure, Sanchez was a low hanging fruit. Sure, holding bushCO accountable for their illegalities, lies and cheats would be better. But, I'm at least a bit warmer knowing that there was an accountability moment today. That tells me that there is still some bit of conscience left in our People; and that gives me hope.
Let's build on it, okay?
