I've written quite a bit about the race between Jocelyn Benson and Ruth Johnson for Michigan's Secretary of State office. While there are already a host of good reasons to support Benson, a highly qualified election law expert, over Johnson, a partisan politician running for yet another office, here's another good reason.
As the Benson campaign pointed out this morning, Ruth Johnson accepted a $10,000 campaign donation from Meijer Inc., a company that was busted for flagrantly violating Michigan's campaign finance laws by creating and funding a shadowy group that orchestrated a campaign to recall local officials in Acme Township that voted against the company's interests.
In the aftermath of Meijer's involvement in the recall effort, the Traverse City Record Eagle said it best.
There is deep-rooted Meijer arrogance here, of course. But there is also great contempt for our most essential values -- the right of the people to choose who governs and the laws that make that system work.
Apparently Ruth Johnson, who is running to be the head of the department that oversees Michigan's election laws, has no problem accepting money from a company that has shown a complete disregard for following those very laws.
It's critical that Michigan turn aside Johnson's partisan games and elect someone who will bring a great deal of knowledge, experience, and ethic to the office. We need to Vote Benson!
