Whereas I know that herding cats during an earthquake in the rain through LA is easy compared to keeping Democrats together,
(even if they control three branches of government and have a shot at transforming everything)
Whereas I know that Republicans are less likely to stray than beagles during a fox hunt,
(even when guilty of wars and torture and rentboys)
I still wonder what the last decade would have been like if we behaved as they do:
A unified obstructionist Democratic party:
Would have fought and perhaps won Bush v Gore.
Would have fought and probably stopped the Bush tax cuts for the obscenely rich.
Would not even have considered invading Iraq.
Would not have approved a couple of SC judges.
Would not have allowed the deficit and debt to balloon larger than a stratospheric helium weather station.
Would hot have allowed the conditions for the Great Recession to flourish.
I am sure you can think of others, which you'll develop and amend in the comments (apologies for any mistakes in chronology, I've just found out my entire culture and history was made up after I was born.)
But, the thing that really bothers me, is:
What if we had behaved like Republicans as soon as we took power!
By starting investigations on:
the route to war,
Abu Ghraib,
Tora Bora,
Guantanamo,
Ohio,
regulatory collusion,
military contractors,
Dick Chaney,
etc… (again, feel free to add in comments, I feel this post is a work in progress)
but, we did not. Our President, to his everlasting karmic credit, tried to take the high road. They behaved as they ever do.
Still, I'd rather have our herd of cats than their lockstep robots.
I hope and believe that it is not too late to remind the American people of the crimes and criminal mistakes and sheer failure of the last sixteen years of Republicanism.
Oh, another bit from the Onion.
Cheers
