So I was tooling about the site and happened across the currently rec'd diary Bachmann removes her voting registration. Several commenters noted the diarist's (quiet in NC) hilarious sig line (Desperately clinging to my four fucking bananas.) and Voracious suggested that Kos needed a sig line diary. Thats where I come in.
I've never had the pleasure of tripping over a sig line diary, and I would like to think my siggy has an interesting story to it, which would make for an extremely large comment. So here is the story behind my sig line, (I am the neo-con nightmare, I am a liberal with the facts.) and your chance to tell us about your siggy in the comments to this diary.
The first thing which really piqued my interest in politics was the Iran Contra scandal. I could not understand how Olly North became a hero to Republicans for breaking the law and selling arms to Iran. That was my inaugural dip in liberal waters and, oddly enough, I still often find myself wondering why conservatives think the way they do.
When I first got politically involved I was actually homeless. I would lay in my tent at night listening to a transistor radio through a set of headphones. The right wing talker I listened to at the time was Art Bell out of Las Vegas Nevada. The Art Bell of the late 80's & early 90's was not the conspiracy obsessed extraterrestrial boogey man host which made him famous. He was mainly into political talk and I almost never agreed with him.
I would walk down to the local payphone and call his 800 number 5 nights a week. Sometimes I would get right through, but other times I would be standing in the booth for hours, trying to get through the busy signal and once the line was ringing, hoping and praying he would pick me up before the line dropped off. But I would get through everynight.
Another liberal caller to the show gave himself the monicker of the Iranian moderate... which was really topical and hilarious at the time. So I decided to follow suit and adopted the nickname of "the bipartisan basher".
At the time I really attempted to throw in some jibes at Democrats to live up to the title... but after a few months I determined that I could not in good conscience continue with the bipartisan part of the name, because nearly every call I made to Bell was me tearing up some conservative meme or politician. So I renamed myself "the conservative nightmare". I would start off every call with the same greeting: "Well Hello! I am the conservative nightmare, I am a liberal with the facts." And by gum, I lived up to that name...
After Art went all conspiracy theory alien ghosty on us I lost interest in his show. So the conservative nightmare went on hiatus for over a decade... until one day shortly after the 2004 presidential election I found myself registering for an account on Daily Kos. As I was filling out the application I had the opportunity to pick my siggy, and thought that my opening greeting to Art Bell fit nicely . I reworked it ever so slightly to fit modern times and that is how my siggy came to be.
I generally get good feedback when people comment on my siggy, but I had one user tell me they thought it was an insult to all liberals except myself. I rather tend to think it is a compliment to all liberals, and a general putdown of neo-cons... but I'm a bit biased about it to be sure.
