EcoJustice: TEH CRAZY IZ OUT THAR VOTIN, by guest author, Raz teh Kat
Humans are funny creatures.
What other species votes for a political party that vows to destroy the government? Then, two years after they deliver respectably on that promise, they still have people wanting to bring them back. Why do they think they are better off being ruled by the whims of corporations? Well, other than the ones getting rich as a result.
It is because these people are trained to respond to key words just like Pavlov's dogs responded to a bell. Why do you think Fox is so repetitive, anyway? The kitties think they're pretty amusing. Ronald Reagan! Yay!!! Tax cuts! Yay!!! Illegal immigrants! Boo!!!
The war of choice in Iraq has already cost over $700 billion -- not so different than the stimulus that the GOP noise machine criticizes. But there is worry that the stimulus will strap the grandchildren. Don't the grandkids have to pay for the war, too? Why was it okay to spend that money?
It is a form of the most cynical of lies, cherry picking government spending that helps the economy for the poor and middle class while the profiteers laugh their way to the bank. And this hyperbole about socialists? Forget that the military really is a socialist enterprise.
It doesn't freaking matter what is true or not. It's just what they can get the base to believe.
Give $1000 cash to someone who desperately needs food, shoes, and coats for his kids, and give $1000 to a zillionaire through a tax cut. Which choice stimulates the economy? It's the one where that money gets spent. The poor guy is going to spend it on all of the stuff that he needs. The rich guy isn't going to change his spending habits much. Yet, the GOPy base cheers the ineffective solution as the one to pursue.
This election is about pushing back against the cynical fiction created by entrenched interests that want to take the money and run. Again.
If nothing else, GOTV is an ecojustice issue. The poor are the people who ultimately suffer for corporate greed. And those worried about the grandkids should consider this: The main climate threat from CO2 is from sources that do not yet exist. By an order of magnitude, the cheapest energy source for a developing nation is coal. Unless we create a cost efficient source of carbon free (or carbon neutral) energy, all developing nations will burn coal. You do the math. And the Republicans stand against sustainable energy development in every way.
It's up to us, and the time is now. Get out the vote.

China greenhouse gas growth "daunting": U.S. envoy. Rapid economic growth will push its emissions of the main greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide, to between 9.6 and 10.1 billion tons of CO2 per year by 2020, compared with 5.2 billion in 2005, according to a study from the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Can't wait until other developing countries modernize...
