I write this diary wrapped in my Comfort Quilt, knowing the magic of these talismans of hope and harbingers of change.
I came to live in California from Hong Kong and Australia in the middle of Jerry Brown's first governorship. He ran the place well then. He will do so again.
We just can't have any more years with the Golden State in the hands of the likes of George Deukmejian, Pete Wilson, Arnold Schwarzenegger or Meg Whitman...Meg Whitman??
If you believe in integrity. If you believe in solid personal values. If you believe in politicians who don't make empty promises. If you believe in politicians who do what they say they will do. There is only one candidate for Governor on the ballot.
$10 or 50 words could be all it takes to send Jerry back to Sacramento. And to get a chance in a drawing to win the pictured quilt made by Sara R.
When Jerry Brown was Governor of California from 1975 to 1983, in those years (according to Wikipedia):
Upon taking office, Brown gained a reputation as a fiscal conservative. The American Conservative noted he was "much more of a fiscal conservative than Governor Reagan." His fiscal restraint resulted in one of the biggest budget surpluses in state history. He was both in favor of a Balanced Budget Amendment and opposed to Proposition 13, the latter of which would decrease property taxes and greatly reduce revenue to cities and counties. When Proposition 13 passed, he heavily cut state spending and used much of the surplus his government had built up, roughly $5 billion, to meet the proposition's requirements and help offset the revenue losses. His actions in response to the proposition earned him praise from Proposition 13 author Howard Jarvis who went as far to campaign for Brown's successful reelection bid in 1978.
We need his experience, ability, frugal management style and humanity now more than ever.
In Meg's world, everyone loses, except for her wealthy friends. As Carlos suggested to Meg prophetically at Woodstock more than 40 years ago:
In Jerry's world, we all pull together and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The community signed a quilt in Chicago at the 2007 Yearly Kos. It is, in a sense, a snapshot of who we were then. It could be yours!
Every day in October brings an opportunity to enter a drawing to benefit Jerry Brown’s campaign for Governor of California. Every donation of $10 or more to the fundraiser’s Act Blue page will count for a chance – one chance per person per day. You don't need to spend money to enter, however. If you are not donating, you can enter and have an equal chance of winning by writing an essay of 50 words or less on “Why I want Jerry Brown to be California’s next Governor”. Send your essay with a subject line, "Jerry Brown Essay", to communityquilts (at) yahoo (dot) com. If we find your essay topical, it will count for a chance. As with donations, one essay per person per day will count as a chance. Only one form of entry is allowed for a person on a given day.
The winning ticket of the “From Red to Blue” quilt
At the end of the fundraiser period, Sara R will assign a ticket number to each chance and ask a neighborhood child to pull just one ticket. The drawing will be the first week in November.
Drawing for the star quilt
Quilt stats: It is 59” square, made of cotton fabric with a cotton batting. My sister and I pieced it. I hand quilted it. The blocks feature 1930s reproduction fabric (feedsack prints) on one side, and bright, jewel toned contemporary fabrics on the other. The quilt is sleeved for hanging and would look great on your wall!
