You don't tug on Superman's cape
You don't spit into the wind
You don't pull the mask off the old Lone Ranger
And you don't mess around with Jim

But most of all, you don't insult Barack Obama in Rhode Island.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Frank Caprio seems to have lost support since telling the president to take his endorsement and "shove it," according to an NBC 10-Quest Research poll released Wednesday night.

Caprio lost 12 points and has gone from first to third place.

MAJOR UPDATE:  Phoenix Endorses Chafee

Former U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee appears to have a 7- percentage-point lead in the race for governor and someone new to worry about heading toward the finish. And it is not state Treasurer and Democratic nominee Frank T. Caprio -- the one-time frontrunner -- according to the latest poll that retired Rhode Island College Prof. Victor Profughi conducted for WJAR-Channel 10.

Lincoln Chafee, the true Progressive, is winning this race.

When RIFUTURE was first starting to get noticed in local political circles, the mainstream media would frequently refer to us as a "Democratic-leaning" blog.  One of the blog’s first big "breaks" came during the 2006 Rhode Island Senate election between incumbent Lincoln Chafee and challenger Sheldon Whitehouse.  We were proud to take an active, activist role in electing Senator Whitehouse who is making us proud with his progressive service in the Senate.

But sometimes the past is not prologue and 2010 is a very strange political year.  Here at RIFUTURE we have tried to emphasize it is the ideals of progressive government, not the party label, which important.  We are, we believe, more vociferous in our criticism Democrats than Republicans in our State who chose failed conservative policies for the sake of political expediency rather than sound public policy. That is why we cannot support the endorsed Democrat for election in 2010. At best, it would be a continuation of the Carcieri years. At worst, it would be a further step to the Right.

President Barack Obama and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg praise Linc Chafee for his courageous vote against the Iraq War, his honesty, integrity and independence.

From the Providence Phoenix, a weekly emphasizing local arts, entertainment, lifestyle and political coverage from a liberal perspective.

The paper is, in format and editorial content, very much like the Village Voice in New York.

Many Rhode Islanders are still undecided about the governor's race. Until this week, the Phoenix, too, was torn. Democratic Treasurer Frank Caprio, an undeniably able official, offers a focused, business-based plan to revive the ailing state. And former US Senator Lincoln Chafee, an admirable one-time Republican renegade now running as an independent, presents a chance to sideline the politics of small minds and petty grievances.

When Caprio blasted President Barack Obama, telling him to take his endorsement and "shove it," he brought political realities into clear focus. If it were not for Obama, there would have been no economic stimulus. And as bad as the unemployment situation still is, it would have been even worse had the Obama Administration not pulled the economy back from the brink.

As challenged as Rhode Island's educational infrastructure is, there would be even less hope of turning it around if it were not for the $75 million in Obama-sponsored Race to the Top funds flowing into the state. That Caprio has been a more vocal supporter of Race to the Top than Chafee makes his sharp rebuke of the president even more bizarre. Our next governor needs his head screwed on straight.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
