This is a Gulf Watchers GOTV SPECIAL MID-TERM ELECTION EDITION: Focusing on 2 CA Local Ticket Items:
- Kamala Harris for CA-AG
- NO on PROP 23
California sets the direction for our nation, and as such, this is probably one of the most critical battles for our environment today. Her opponent is backed by big oil. The latest poll shows Kamala slightly up, but she has been behind up until now. Please help if you can.

A poem ...
"All Politics is Local"
all battles are personal,
all issues are of the heart,
all concerns are important,
the devil's in the details,
the god's in the details,
the mastery's in the details,
we must never give up,
for each and every fight,
for civil rights,
for environmental causes,
for local leaders,
for solitary plights,
we must never give up,
it all matters,
everything matters,
everyone matters,
if one person is abused denied violated,
we are all abused denied violated,
we could all be abused denied violated,
everything matters,
all battles are personal,
all wars are personal,
all challenges are personal,
we are not alone, because we, together,
care about each other,
we fight alongside each other,
we fight for each other,
we fight to defend each other,
we listen, we hear, we respond,
because we care,
because all battles are personal,
because all politics is local
Vote for Kamala Harris for CA-AG
Vote NO on CA-PROP 23
~ArthurPoet~
Kamala Harris for CA-AG is our ally ... she is an outspoken advocate for the environment, as well as, for all of the fundamental ideals of the Progressive Liberals. This is a battle we can win, and it will make a difference in the future of our Planet. She will fight for us, whereas, her opponent, Steve Cooley(R), disbanded his environmental crimes unit to shut down a probe of one of his campaign contributors.
I have been committed to getting Kamala Harris elected ever since a good friend of mine who works with her on her campaign told me about her, and when I saw her speak at an event here in Los Angeles. Eighteen months ago I posted a diary introducing Kamala Harris for CA-AG to dailykos.
Here on dialykos, we typically focus on National Politics, but the local, down-ticket ones, ("in the trenches") get less and less exposure, the further they are from the national spotlight. Yet in reality, these are often where the real pitch battles are fought, where the important precedents are set, where the critical victories are felt, and where the lasting differences are made: Case in point: Prop 8 in 2008, set the tone for the LGBT community's national battles.
Today, here in California, there are two such battles:
- Kamala Harris for CA-AG
- NO on PROP 23
The Republicans do not miss the importance of these, and that is why they have been targeted by the Oil Companies, who have sunk massive funds into Cooley's campaign against Kamala Harris, and to pass PROP 23, here in California. This battle matters.
Please watch this video, and get everyone you know who lives in California to vote for KAMALA HARRIS CA-ATTORNEY GENERAL, and VOTE NO ON 23, and if you can, contribute to her campaign: here, and if you can phone bank, contact: alida@kamalaharris.org.
VIDEO: Kamala Harris: Fighting Back Against Big Oil
Great video by PowerPAC about the potentially devastating consequences of allowing Steve Cooley to be elected CA AG. Support Kamala D. Harris and tell Karl Rove and Big Oil that your vote is not for sale!
Kamala Harris is a Kossack, this is a blog she posted on PROP 23, on dailykos:
Texas Oil Companies Invade California
Texas oil companies want to stop California before we can really implement AB 32, our landmark climate change legislation. Valero Energy Corp. and Tesoro Corp., both based in Texas, are almost single-handedly financing a measure that would eviscerate AB 32. The two companies have pledged $2 million to help get the initiative on the ballot, and even tried to sneak their contributions past any observers.
...
In 2006, the California Legislature passed AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act. The Governor then signed this law to make our state the leader in fighting greenhouse gas pollution. I hope you will consider joining me in working to ensure that Big Oil does not get its way in California by eviscerating our landmark climate change legislation.
California's Attorney General is uniquely positioned to stand up for strong, effective enforcement of our state's environmental laws. That is why I am calling on each and every candidate for California Attorney General -- Democratic and Republican -- to denounce this effort by Big Oil to slash through our state's environmental protections for their own corporate gain.
*** NO ON PROP 23 ***
STOP The Texas Oil Companies' Scheme to Repeal the Clean Energy and Air Pollution Standards
Two Texas oil companies are spending millions on Prop. 23.
Prop. 23 will:
- Result in more air pollution and increase public health risks
- Jeopardize 500,000 jobs and $10 billion in private investment in California clean energy businesses
- Increase consumer energy costs by up to $650 per year by keeping us addicted to costly Oil.

===== BP / GULF NEWS SUMMARY =====
PROPUBLICA: Why Tracking BP Worker Deaths Is Tricky
[10/27/10] Our coverage of BP [1] this week examined the company's role in the industry, comparing it with other oil giants in terms of production, spills and worker-safety violations. One thing we had to leave out was worker fatalities.
That's because of a quirk in how OSHA, the federal agency charged with protecting workplace safety, keeps track of the information: OSHA lists deaths according to the company that employed the dead workers, not by the company responsible for their deaths.
Take, for example, the 2005 explosion at a BP refinery in Texas City that killed 15 workers. A search for database records of the accident revealed that OSHA cited BP for hundreds of violations and millions of dollars in fines. However, if you search through BP's OSHA records [2], you will find no death in that blast attributed to BP.
An OSHA spokeswoman said the agency tracks fatalities by primary employer because it is that employer's job to train the worker and keep the workplace safe.
MSNBC MSN: 'Crime scene' security set up around busted Gulf rig
[10/28/10] Justice Department says move tells 'parties' capable of reaching mile-deep rig that site is off-limits
WASHINGTON POST: Tests showed unstable cement in gulf oil well before explosion
[10/28/10] Three out of four advance tests the oil services firmHalliburton carried out on a cement mixture used to try to close BP's Macondo oil well in the Gulf of Mexico showed that the cement would be unstable, according to evidence collected by the National Oil Spill Commission.
NY TIMES: Panel Says Firms Knew of Cement Flaws Before Spill
[10/29/10] WASHINGTON — Halliburton knew weeks before the fatal explosion of the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico that the cement mixture they planned to use to seal the bottom of the well was unstable but still went ahead with the job, the presidential commission investigating the accident said on Thursday.
NYT EDITORIAL: Remember Green energy?
What took them so long?
[10/28/10] Until a little over three weeks ago, the Interior Department had approved more than 73,000 oil and gas leases since 2005, but only one offshore wind energy project and not a single solar project.

The Development Driller 3 moved off from Relief Well #1's wellhead area at about 1:00 AM a week ago Saturday. She joined the Discoverer Enterprise, who's been stationary for the past month or so, approximately six miles northwest of the Development Driller 2. The Discoverer Enterprise is a dredger, and has been accompanied for some time by anti-pollution vessels, generally the Virginia Responder and the Mississippi Responder. The move by DD3 has not been reported in any news we've seen, but it's the first she's moved off the Macondo site since arriving to drill the relief wells with her sister ship, DD2.
In the meantime, the West Sirius (photos and descriptions and here and here), a semi-submersible driller, has replaced the DD3 beside DD2. Cargo ships, skimmers, and various other ships have been seen coming and going from the area of both Development Drillers on a regular basis.
That's a lot of action for the waters around a well that was supposed to be plugged and abandoned a long time ago.
